Mesoscale Model Evaluation Testbed

MMET Case: 04 April 2011

Case Description

Reason for interest: Record-breaking severe report day

A strong mid- and upper-level trough moved east over the southern plains. Abundant heating and moisture along with strong wind shear encouraged the development of large, long-lived squall lines with embedded supercells. Severe reports stretched from Pennsylvania to East Texas. There were over 1300 severe wind reports on this day - not to mention 90 hail and 68 tornado reports.
