MMET Case: 08-14 September 2013

Case Description

Reason for interest: Record floods in Colorado.

This case features historic widespread flooding around Denver and Boulder, Colorado and areas to the north and west. Monsoonal moisture was brought into place by a nearly stationary low pressure system. Upslope flow along with a stationary front allowed for continued precipitation development from 11 September through 13 September. At least 8 deaths were attributed to this event, along with damages to many homes, bridges, roads, and other structures. Rainfall totals exceeded 20 inches in parts of Boulder County. One of Boulder's weather stations set records for 1-day, 2-day, 7-day, and 1-month precipitation totals.
