Welcome to the users home page for the NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) Nonhydrostatic Multiscale Model on the B-grid (NMMB). NEMS-NMMB is under development at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).

The DTC is currently working with the NEMS-NMMB software package and supports it to friendly users at this time. Full support, including Users' Guide documentation and Users' tutorials will be added in the future. Please check back for updated information as this webpage is fully populated over time.

NCEP operational description

The NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) was developed and continues to be enhanced to establish a common modeling framework that facilitates streamlined interactions of analysis, forecast, and post-processing systems within NCEP. The NEMS architecture is a high performance software superstructure and infrastructure based on the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) for use in operational prediction models at NCEP.

The NAM modeling suite was the first operational implementation of NEMS at NCEP. The NAM prediction model within the NEMS framework is the Nonhydrostatic Multiscale Model on B-grid (NMMB), which can be run globally or regionally with embedded nests. For the operational NAM, the NMMB runs over the existing North American domain to 84-h, with four static one-way nests which run to 60-h: 4 km CONUS, 6 km Alaska, 3 km Hawaii, and 3 km Puerto Rico. Within either the CONUS or Alaska nest, a placeable on-call nest at 1.333 km (CONUS) or 1.5 km (Alaska) is run to 36-h to provide support for fire weather and other hazardous situtations.
